Environmental Models

The specialisation area was created to supply mathematical modelling evaluations for engineering and environmental aspects. High skilled specialists can model complex systems in relation with six main application fields:


Hydrodynamic

2D and 3D applications for coastal, river, lake and estuarine areas often used as a baseline for environmental analyses.
The analysis are performed with state of the art models developed in major hydraulic laboratories and are able to take into account phenomena as:

  • Drying and flooding of tidal flats
  • Density driven flows
  • Wave induced stresses and mass fluxes
  • Flow through hydraulic structures
  • Wind driven flows including cyclonic / hurricane / typhoon winds

 
Water Quality

Environmental modeling based on the transport of substances in the water using the advection-diffusion equation. Some areas of applications are:

  • Sewage and/or water outfall studies
  • Recirculation of cooling water from power and desalination plants
  • Effects of dredging on the environment
  • Simulation of oil spills

 
Ecology

Integrated nutrient, phytoplankton and algae modeling tools including processes related with dissolved oxygen, nutrients processes, etc..


Morphology

Short and long term morphological evaluations considering the complex interactions between waves, currents, sediment transport and bathymetry.


Air pollution

Regional and detailed 3D air dispersion models.


Sound and noise

Noise modeling encompasses traffic noise, occupational noise indoors and outdoors, general industrial noise and aircraft noise.

Studies and modeling activities are usually performed in the framework of projects as a support for the design activities.
