Roads and Motorways

The road is historically the oldest transport mode.

Civilizations like the Romans built their empire on a very efficient and well maintained road network Rome oriented (“all roads lead to Rome”) which was central to their economic and social development and to military control.

Today, the road network is still part of the core of the transport system and even though road operators and decision makers are facing user’s new expectations, the road network is still playing the same fundamental role as the arteries in a human body: i.e. reaching all parts at any time, allowing the highest possible frequency of the service, etc.

Despite the story and the origin, even the road sector has technologically improved for example in terms of safety, and, besides the new reality of the introduction of electric and hydrogen engines, the new frontier seems to be the driverless car which is going to change road design criteria and technological equipment.
